Operative District Plan

Councils are required to prepare a District Plan under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). The District Plan includes objectives, policies and rules that manage the adverse effects of activities on the environment with a focus on land use and subdivision activities. The New Plymouth District Plan became operative on 15 August 2005, and was reviewed in 2014.

Our new Proposed District Plan was publicly notified on Monday 23 September 2019. Consents will be considered under both the Operative District Plan and any relevant sections of the Proposed District Plan until the Proposed District Plan becomes Operative, which is expected to take around two years. During this period, you should check both the Operative and the Proposed District Plans to fully understand the planning rules for the district.
