Ward structure

A ward is a specific area where voters elect councillors to represent that area. They include general and Māori ward areas.

Ward Structure

The Mayor and 14 councillors make up our Council. All voters elect the mayor and five councillors, plus nine councillors who are elected from the following four wards:

  • Kaitake-Ngāmotu General (six councillors): Elected by those on the General electoral roll in that ward
  • Kōhanga Moa General (one councillor): Elected by those on the General electoral roll in that ward
  • North General (one councillor): Elected by those on the General electoral roll in that ward
  • Te Purutanga Mauri Pūmanawa Māori (one councillor): Elected by those on the Māori electoral roll

Community Boards

In addition, there will be 20 community board members elected as follows:

  • Clifton Community Board (four members)
  • Inglewood Community Board (four members)
  • Kaitake Community Board (four members)
  • Puketapu-Bell Community Board (four members)
  • Waitara Community Board (four members)

What do Community Boards do?

Community Boards represent and advocate for the interests of smaller communities within the district. The Boards liaise with community and public organisations and maintain an overview of the services the Council provides in the area.

New Plymouth District’s Community Boards work with their communities to prepare a three year Community Board Plan setting out the visions and aspirations of the Board, providing Council with an insight into matters that are important to each community and where investment and action is needed.
